One week in Paris and of course, trains have to be on strike at least once.
May 31st
Just bicycled across Paris back to my train station after a fun evening with friends. Love this rental bike concept.

Great word I learned today, courtesy of Thomas; chronophage - it’s French but seems to exist in English too and means time consuming.

Ah, the pain of narrowband @ 45kps. If only broadband were as ubiquitous as electricity. In 10 years maybe?

Seems like I’m only commenting weather these days, but the thunderstorm and downpoor in Paris are pretty amazing right now.

No walk tonight, but a sip of Calvados; time for bed.

Another evening walk, alone this time. And just saw a bats fly around.

Just came back from an evening walk; it’s a warm and humid night in Paris. Something I miss in Sweden.

Travel Checklist
A while ago, I had read somewhere about keeping a travel checklist, detailing basically all possible items that you might need to pack. When actually packing for a trip, the list then comes in handy as a reminder not to forgot anything. I rarely add anything to the list these days, which I take as an obvious sign of system maturity. Even though I obviously don’t pack everything that’s...

Bamboo Shoots
I like bamboo shoots a lot, but didn’t know how to get or prepare them. Joi’s posted a great video available here. Looks tasty!

It’s amazing to walk to work through the small streets of Lund - flowers everywhere and such a sweet scent in the air.

Enjoying Quinoa
A while ago, I read about Quinoa and its balanced nutritious value somewhere. I bought some at my local supermarket, but forgot about it in my cupboard. Until recently… And I find it most delicious! It’s very easy to cook and ready to eat in just under 20 minutes. The texture is al dente and the taste an interesting mixture between rice and cereal, very nice with a bit of olive oil...

Oh come on! When I create a new beneficiary for a money transfer on my French bank’s website, I need to wait 5 days for “security” reasons.

This is a great TED talk about our eating habits - too much meat, too much fast-food, too few vegetables. Mark Bittman tells a very convincing story well worth watching. Also, I didn’t know that the second biggest contributor to atmosphere altering gases is livestock production! (Number one is energy production, number three transportation.)

How to raise purchasing power?
According to an Ifop poll in France, 85% of respondents say by cutting the sales tax, 72% by increasing the minimum wage; only 42% suggest increasing competition! I got this information from Purchasing-power disparity, a short, but excellent article published in this week’s Economist. Increasing the purchasing power is a big topic these days in France - according to La Tribune, the...

Eagle Pose
I’ve been looking more into yoga lately (using Yoga Journal), since I feel my body is just rusting away sitting in the office all day. Even though I exercise (jog or gym) usually once a week, I’m finding my body getting stiffer. Eagle Pose feels especially good in my shoulders, but I’m having trouble crossing one leg above the other and keeping balance.

I’m not really familiar with surfing, but Out There seems like an amazing film, with breathtaking surf scenes, but also grave words about our environment (water, development…). Probably I’ll order the DVD.  Also, the song called Comatose by Timmy Curran in the trailer is a perfect fit, I think. You can download it on the artist’s website. The entire album is really good...

Saturdays, 5AM
I’m an avid reader of The Economist and especially appreciate their audio edition, which is an MP3 download of the entire newspaper read word for word. The paper copy is hand delivered to my home and arrives Saturdays at around 5AM. I’m awoken almost every week by the metal sound my mail slot makes when you stick something in it. But, and call me crazy, I actually like it. I wake...
